THE COMPOSING & TELLING OF “ZEMZEM”
During the Ramadan summer of 1983, I spent three months at the Chautauqua Institution of the Arts (Chautauqua, New York) composing a classical piece of music for dance entitled “Zemzem.” The story of the piece was suggested to me by my dervish friend and dancer Nur Alif al-Jerrahi (Connie Hanham). The piece is musically based on several Turkish “makams” (scales) I learned through singing “illahis”, the sacred hymns of the dervishes.
Zemzem is a spring found in Arabia. It is said that long ago the Prophet Abraham decided to have a child. His wife Sarah was barren and so, as was the custom, she gave Abraham her slave-girl Hagar. Hagar conceived and bore Abraham a son — Ismail. Abraham was very pleased. However, soon after, by a miracle of God, Sarah did in fact conceive and give birth to a
son — Isaac. Now that she had her own son, Sarah took a great disliking to Hagar and her baby. She told Abraham to banish them both. God spoke to Abraham and told him to follow the counsel of Sarah, and not to grieve. God promised that Ismail should be blessed. Abraham took Hagar and child
deep into the desert and left them in the hands of God. Here the dance piece “Zemzem” begins.
The storyline of “Zemzem” is drawn from middle-eastern legend, the Old
Testament, and the Qur’an. It is faithful to the original sources.
“Zemzem” opens with a view of the burning desert as the short overture plays. After the overture, Abraham and Hagar appear with the infant Ismail swathed in Hagar’s arms. Abraham says goodbye to Hagar and indicates that God will take care of her. They dance together and he leaves. Hagar is alone in the universe. She spins around bewildered, finally abandoning herself to an ecstatic submission to God’s will. She comforts Ismail, as the heat grows steadily more oppressive. The sun shines ever brighter in this transcendental realm. Their thirst is great. Hagar goes in search of water. Here begins on of the well-known legends in middle-eastern culture — Hagar runs seven times between two hills “Safa and Mawa.” Each time she becomes more desperate and fatigued. Eventually she collapses in despair.
She lies clutching Ismail to her. Suddenly a crack in reality opens and there is a beautiful man there – the Archangel Gabriel. He stomps his foot, and out gushes a clean, cool spring — Zemzen. Hagar looks up; Gabriel smiles and is gone.
She gives Ismail to drink, drinks herself, and stands and whirls in ecstasy. Evening has descended and so Hagar and Ismail settle down for the night.
At dawn a melody is heard — a distant flute. The sound increases and broadens as Hagar awakes and sees a wandering tribe approaching. They are the “Bani Jurham” who have been in search of water. They see Zemzem, Hagar, and Ismail. They approach Hagar and request permission to drink from the spring. Hagar welcomes them. After refreshing themselves, all do a dance of joy, happiness, and thanksgiving to God.
Thus ends the piece. The Becca valley soon became a halt for caravans due to the excellence and the abundance of the water. Ismail grew up and was made king of the Bani Jurham. Thus Abraham was the fountainhead of two spiritual streams, two religions, two worlds for God, two circles, therefore two centers — Jerusalem and Mecca (as it soon became known). Zemzem still exists. I have drunk of its waters.
Upon returning to my home in New York, my friend Terrence McKeever (May God sanctify his soul) recorded me performing “ZemZem” at Adelphi University (Garden City, Long Island, New York). I sent the tape to John Schaefer, host and producer (since 1982) of the popular new-music radio program “New Sounds” on WNYC-FM. Schaefer’s program is called “The #1 radio show for the Global Village” by Billboard magazine. Schaefer honored my work by airing “ZemZem” several times on his program.

I am Raj, 25 year old. I work in a 5 star hotel in service, as captain. I am from a middle class family. My father is a government employee, mother is housewife, 2 sisters, married.
I am in love with a girl, and she loves me too.
About my girlfriend, she works in an MNC, BACS. She is a very ambitious girl, used to work with me in the same hotel, when we fell in love, but left the hotel due to some reasons. i helped her in finding jobs which she joined and quit but now she has got stable job and is happy working in this MNC now.
But we can not marry. The problem is that i am a schedule caste boy, and she is a Garhwali brahmin from Dehradun. I know about my family, they love me and will accept a girl from other caste, i know this, as they keep asking me for my preferences and choices for any girl whom i love for marriage. I havent disclosed my lovestory to my family, because they may get tensed or try to convince my girlfriend’s family.
I have tried of convincing her for marriage as my family insists me to get married now. On my request she tried to speak to her father, not opening the whole story but indicating, if she marries a boy of backward caste, It was a great dispute and she tried of leaving me even. Her parents even want her to get married and settled now with some guy of thier choice but She has been denying for the proposals because she is not ready for the marriage right now. She is doing distance study, preparing for competitive exams which reflects that she will not marry for another 2 years.
I dont want her to marry me right now. My only question from you is what should i do now. I feel helpless, i love her verymuch and she loves me alot too. We are together since 2 and half years now and love eachother alot. But because of our caste difference we are little unhappy, and sometimes our conversation result in disputes and she tries to go away from me but comes back, coz she knows i love her alot. I dont want to disturb the peace at her home by letting her family come to know about me. She loves her family alot and can never ever think of telling them about me, coz she is afraid her father might do something, which will not be good. She has tried of leaving me twice or thrice, and have comeback, as she realised , she finds difficult to live without me.
I love her alot , but little confused, what should i do, because i know she will never disclose this to her family. She says ,her family trusts her alot and will never expect her to do such thing, and that too with a schedule caste guy. Its a matter of concern about what people will say, her family members, society, and everything stops when it comes to me my caste.
I feel very pity on myself, i cant do anything in this. I m afraid of telling this to my family even because i dont even have my girlfriend to stand with me. Neither i can tell this to her family , it will be a nuisance, if i do so. I dont want to talk to her regarding this , because she doesnt know how badly i m depressed or disturbed. She is fine right now and we talk regularly, meet once a week. We are very close to eachother and have been intimate aswell. . I dont want to loose her. I love her.
I dont want to talk to my girlfriend about this, because i have tried doing it, many times and we have resulted only in disputes, quarrels, not talking to eachother, but she has never made me felt bad about my realty, that i m an SC. She has always loved me. But she can never think of talking about me to her family as it will be not good for her, and me aswell.
She always say, she will be ok, if i will not in her life, time will heal everything.
